[Jayou Initiative] News Alert: Two American Reporters Detained in North Korea.

We write to update you on this recent and pressing news from North Korea.

Two American television reporters, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, have been detained in North Korea for weeks. Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee were arrested by the North Korean military near the border between North Korea and China on March 17 and will be tried on charges of “suspicions of illegal entry and hostile acts.” Reporters Without Borders (RSF) claims the two women face being sentenced to 10 years of hard labor.

This dire situation requires the immediate attention and action of everyone. The International Women’s Media Foundation and Reporters Without Borders have joined together to launch a petition for the immediate and unconditional release of reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Please take 5 minutes out of your day to help sign the petition and forward this e-mail along.

Visit their website and add your name to the petitions for their release.

As any change must begin somewhere, it is the single individual who will experience it and carry it through.
Carl G. Jung

Secret Identities

Secret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology Book Tour

Editors Jeff Yang, Parry Shen and Keith Chow will be here to help us explore the fascinating world that brought us Watchman, The Hulk, Spiderman, Batman, Superman and others by examining the convergence of Asian American narratives, experiences and identity through the genre of the comic-book superhero mythos. In popular culture, comic book superheroes often portray the struggles of aliens, perceived or otherwise, mainstreaming into American culture or soaring high above it; the ultimate model minority: a subset of society who faces resentment, the burden of exaggerated expectations and occasionally hatred or fear. Secret Identities, the first ever Asian American superhero anthology, is an exploration of an unusual and overlooked cultural connection: A showcase for a unique collection of talent working within one of the 21st centurys most dynamic mediums of expression. Most of all, its an opportunity to unleash a bumper crop of supermen and wonder women who look, think, live and leap into actionfor truth, justice and the Asian American way. Paid for by the Student Cultural Programming Fee.

Maasu 2009

Taken from http://www.maasu.org/node/11

“The Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU) was started in response to a need for political unity among Asian American students in the Midwest. By 1990, there were more than 20 universities in the Midwest that had formed APA organizations. Some had been around for years; some were in their infancy. Students felt there needed to be an organization that would support the growth of these organizations and organize APA students in the Midwest for political activism, and MAASU was formed to fill this responsibility.”
